Found the answer. In WebAdmin, select Options > Receivers > Closest aircraft receiver and choose the receiver (or combined feed) that the closestAircraft.json should be constructed from. I found the answer in https://www.virtualradarserver.co.uk/Documentation/WebServer/ReceiversOptions.aspx

Are you running on mono? I have the same issue running on mono.
No fix as yet.

Is there a particular reason that closestAircraft.json does not show aircraft derived from MLAT? I am using this file to display the closest aircraft to my position on a custom dashboard (Organizr) but it only includes ADS-B craft and not the light aircraft/army helicopters that buzz my house which ...

NB On at least one of the links posted by OP (http://trackadsb.com/VirtualRadar/desktop.html) images are displayed for some aircraft, but for those aircraft, I don't see the call to AirportDataThumbnails.json being made?

Does anybody have a copy of these markers that they could share please, as the URL no longer works - or alternatively a set of custom markers that could be used for military aircraft please? How about a way to designate a geofence around a specific location - possibly the receiver location - and a flag against a particular aircraft, or group of aircraft, that would trigger an alert via email, if the aircraft(s) stray into the geofence area.

It would be nice to have an option in order to colourize the aircraft icon, in order to indicate if the aircraft is ascending, descending or in level flight (ala Basestation). This would allow flightpaths to be monitored.
